Last week I had the opportunity to photograph the political commentator and cultural critic Mark Steyn while he was here on campus. I planned all my shots in advance because I didn’t know how much time I’d get with him. I kept the lighting simple. Metering for the ambient I used just one SB-600 with a warming gel fired into a bounce umbrella just barely out of the frame camera right. Make sure you click on the above image to view it large. As always, comments, questions, and critiques are welcome.

Terrific work as usual, William. It's a very dramatic and classy (classic!) portrait.

I shot this with my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 at 1/60 and f/4 on a tripod. It would have been sharper at a smaller aperture like f/7.1, but this allowed me to capture the ambient light how I wanted it.

That's a great picture – it has a rich, earthy feel. Plus, Mark Steyn, is awesome.
