With only a few days left before the end of our trip my dad brought me my sister’s Canon PowerShot SD600 that he had been using for the last 5 weeks and told me that he was getting a “lens error, restart camera” error message on the LCD screen when he tried to turn it on. The thing had been thoroughly abused during our adventures – accidentally of course – and my mind played back incidents of it being dropped onto sidewalks, sprayed with sea water, and, what I thought brought about its ultimate demise, the time where it came into contact with a sandy beach. I didn’t have the tools to open it up then, but today I finally got around to pulling out a micro screwdriver and removed the six main screws holding the casing together. I found a great guide including pictures on how to open and fix the lens error. I used my Giottos Rocket Air to blow free a number of sand granules from around the lens and gears. I popped the battery back in and voila, the lens actually extended and opened! I reassembled the housing after cleaning sand and other particles from the pieces. The extending and retracting of the lens doesn’t sound as smooth as my SD800, so I’m not sure how much longer it will last, but at least it’s been revived for the time being.

thank you, thank you. For some reason the gears stuck on my sd600. No debris to be found, but by following these instructions fixed my camera in less than 30 min.

Great! I'm glad people are finding this helpful. This seems to be a common problem for many Canon PowerShot cameras during their lifespan, but thankfully it's pretty easy to fix.

Does anyone have pics or a link they could share that shows the further disassembly of the SD600? I think that the gears behind my lens are jammed but would feel better about taking it apart if I had some guidance. Thanks!

Yes thank you very much. All I did was turn the rotor, then slap the battery back in and turn it on and voila….. I appreciate your help.

Worked great! At first when we turned the rotor it seemed to freewheel. Then we pushed the power switch and nothing happened. Disappointing! But then we repeated the process, turning the rotor, and we could feel it engage. By the 3rd try, it worked! Thanks so much!

Thank you so much for posting this! The lens on my SD600 would not extend. I thought I was SOL because I tried restarting it, holding down the menu button to reset it, shaking it, and hitting it on a table, and nothing helped.
I took the covers off of my camera and rotated the rotor with a tiny screwdriver, and saw several grains of sand in the white gear. I removed them with a needle. My camera works again!! It makes a louder noise when the lens extends and retracts, but at least it works. :)

I tried to repair my camera by following your directions on how to fix it, but its still saying lens error restart camera. Also my lens motor would'nt rotate….please help….. Thanks…

@pebbles - Have you tried manually turning the gears and cleaning them? This is what usually fixes the problem, but if you're still experiencing the error, I would try cleaning it again. Make sure you rotate the gears multiple times to make sure any sand or dirt is out. If that still doesn't work, it might that something is actually broken and it would need to be professionally repaired.

I started to unscrew the screws but one of them on the side doesnt come out all of them did but that one :( and suggestions?
- William 19 Jul 10 at 8:15pm

@alexa – Is the screw not rotating at all, or is it just rotating and not coming out? If it's not rotating, push and twist harder. If it is rotating and not coming out, try turning it upside down and screw gently to let gravity help it come out. Tapping the other end of the camera might help, too.

Have canon power shot sd800 that will not turn on regardless of charged battery used. This was a sudden change. After much frustration I went ahead and bought a used one(sd800). I thought I would compare the two and found that my original camera was missing a tiny lever to a micro switch which prevents the camera from turning on while the battery compartment door is open. Such a tiny thing keeping my favorite camera from operating! Is there an easy fix? Can the switch be jumped perrmanently? I mean who turns on the camera while changing a memory card or battery? Any help greatly appreciated.

@Richard – I have never run into this problem before, so I don't know if there is an easy fix. I'm not in a spot right now where I can easily disassemble my SD800 to look at it, but it seems to me you could compare your two cameras and rig up something to replace the lever that would make the camera think that the door is shut all the time so your camera would turn on again. If you do try and fix it, be sure to document the event and let me know when you post it online (or I can post it here for you).

This was most helpful. Very well outlined, and I was able to fix mine after a shock/fall by simply rotating the rotor of the lens motor — probably re-engaging it after the shock. Worked great after that. THANK YOU !!!!!!

Thank you so much for your wonderful picture guide and easy to follow directions. I was sceptical, but desperate, so I took it apart, found the gear, turned it, pressed the button and Viola! The lens opened! Thank you!!

I have Canon SD880 IS, and I can't seem to find the lens gears. My lens motor was at the bottom right corner rather than at the top, and the placement of insides seem to differ from SD600. Can anyone help????

Thank you so much, I've missed a years worth of vacations and family pictures. I was about to buy another camera for another 300 bucks. I always was satisfied with the Canon SD600 until I filmed myself snowboarding and then fell in a valley of powder. Fun video, but my camera stopped working after that. I'm thinking it just need some well deserved attention. So Thanks again.

Hi. I'm happy everyone's having success but I am not. My problem is the reverse; my lens won't retract. I opened it up and tried following your tips but no luck on my end. Is there a reverse process? heehee Thoughts? Thank you for your time.

Hmm, I've never had that problem before. My dad had this issue with his older PowerShot occasionally and he'd just tap the camera on the side with a little force, but you've probably already tried that. Beyond that, I'm not sure. If you find a solution, be sure to post it, though!
