Tomorrow the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show officially kicks off in Las Vegas, and while I’m not in Las Vegas, I will be in the next-best place – the leather chair in front of my computer. I’ll be following the news as it happens on my favorite tech/gadget blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo.

Today holds the Sony keynote, Bill Gates’ 12th (and probably final) CES keynote, and a number of other press conferences. The HD DVD group was also going to have their press conference today but “postponed” it after Warner Home Video announced it will quit making HD DVD movies and move exclusively to cranking out its high-definition content on Blu-ray discs. This, along with New-Line Cinema’s newly-declared allegiance to the steadily-advancing Blu-ray format, seems to have really shaken the HD DVD camp. Sure HD DVD still has Paramount (which includes DreamWorks) and Universal committed to the format, but only time will tell how long that will last. Maybe we’ll see a victor emerge soon in this great format war. Either that or we’ll all just have to buy LG’s Combo Player and accept a dual-format world.
